Everything you need to know about the ESTA for your Disney World trip

When you’re planning your dream Disney holiday to Florida, the last thing you want is paperwork stress. But if you’re travelling from the UK to the USA, there’s one crucial step you must get right before you even board the plane - your ESTA.

At Magic Journey, we help families plan smarter, travel happier, and arrive without the hassle. So here’s your complete guide to the ESTA process — what it is, how to apply, and some tips from our own experience of making the process simple and stress-free.

What Is an ESTA and Why You Need One

ESTA stands for Electronic System for Travel Authorization — an online pre-screening process that allows travellers from eligible countries (including the UK) to visit the United States without a visa for up to 90 days under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).

Think of it as your digital entry ticket to the USA — it’s linked electronically to your passport and checked automatically when you fly.

Without an approved ESTA, you cannot board a flight to the United States.

Who needs it:

  • All UK citizens visiting for tourism, business, or transit (under 90 days)

  • Each member of your party, including children and infants

What it covers:

  • Holidays and short visits

  • Business trips

  • Transit through a U.S. airport

How to Apply for an ESTA

Applying for an ESTA is straightforward, but there are plenty of unofficial websites out there that will try and convince you to book through them. They will charge more and are completely unnecessary. Always apply only through the official U.S. government website:

Here’s the process, step by step:

  1. Go to the official site and select “Apply for New ESTA.”

  2. Complete the online form. You’ll need your passport, employment details, and address of your first night in the U.S.

  3. Pay the fee — currently $40 per person (payable by card). This just increased in September 2025 from $25.

  4. Wait for approval. Most applications are approved within minutes, but it can take up to 72 hours.

  5. Check your email confirmation or revisit the site to verify status.

  6. Magic Journey Tip: Apply as soon as you’ve booked your flights — at least a week before you travel — to avoid any last-minute stress.

Double, triple, quadruple check your details! I can promise you if you don't, 'the fear' will take hold and you will frantically scramble to check them again before you go. Before my most recent visit, despite having completed ESTA numerous times over the last 25 years, I saw a Tiktok of a family who submitted the wrong birthday for a member of their party. As you can probably imagine, this resulted in me hyper analysing all 4 of the ESTA applications I submitted for my group until my vision was blurred! There is no room for error, if you get something wrong, you wont be flying. You can now download the ESTA app which keeps them all really visible in one place too.

If your ESTA expires but your passport is still valid, you can simply reapply — it’s not a complicated renewal process.

Common ESTA Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

  1. Using the wrong website — Only use the official U.S. Customs and Border Protection website. Third-party sites often charge £60–£80 for the same application.

  2. Entering passport details incorrectly — One wrong number can invalidate your approval. Double-check every entry before submitting.

  3. Not updating your details — If you renew your passport, your old ESTA won’t carry over.

  4. Applying too late — Airlines may refuse boarding without proof of approval.

  5. Confusing ESTA with a visa — ESTA = visa waiver. It’s not a visa replacement for long-term stays or work purposes.

Magic Journey Tip: Keep a printed copy of your ESTA approval with your travel documents. You won’t usually need to show it, but it’s reassuring to have it just in case

.

Travelling as a Family

If you’re applying for a family trip, the ESTA system allows group applications — perfect for families heading to Disney together.

Simply click “Group of Applications” on the official site. You’ll be able to:

  • Enter details for multiple travellers

  • Pay in one transaction

  • Receive all confirmations in one email

Although this all might seem intimidating, as long as you set aside some time, it really isn't. When I have done group ESTA applications in the past, I set aside 30 minutes and carefully fill in the form. Once I am done, I will get another member of the party to check the details, just for my sanity if nothing else!

What Happens When You Arrive in the USA

Even with an approved ESTA, you’ll still go through U.S. Customs and Border Protection on arrival. Expect fingerprint scans, a photo, and a few basic questions — nothing intimidating.

Common questions include:

  • “How long will you be staying?”

  • “Where will you be staying?”

  • “What’s the purpose of your visit?”

Magic Journey Tip: Have your hotel name and return flight details easily accessible (digital or printed). It makes the process quicker and shows you’re well prepared.

Reapplying or Updating Your ESTA

You’ll need to reapply if:

  • Your passport expires or is renewed

  • You change your name, gender, or citizenship

  • You’ve answered “Yes” to any new eligibility questions

Otherwise, your ESTA remains valid for two years, covering multiple trips to the U.S.

If you speak to lots of travellers the US border force get a pretty bad rap and in my experience, unfairly so. The vast majority of them I have met on my numerous USA trips have been friendly and helpful. No, they don't greet you with pompoms and a string quartet rendition of the national anthem, but I bet you don't do that either! If you are polite and honest, you will have no problems.

Magic Journey Pro Tips for a Smooth ESTA Experience

Apply on a computer, not your phone. It’s easier to double-check details and upload passport info correctly. Save your confirmation number. It’s required for updates or rechecks. Add your ESTA email to safe senders. Approvals sometimes land in spam folders. Don’t leave it to your travel agent. You’re responsible for your own approval — even if someone else books your flights.

The Bigger Picture: Why ESTA Matters for Disney Travellers

The ESTA isn’t just a form — it’s your first official step into your Disney adventure. Getting it done early means you can focus on what really matters: planning your park days, picking your resort, and making those magical memories.

Final Thoughts

The ESTA process might sound like bureaucracy, but it’s really quick and easy — especially when you know exactly where to go and what to expect. Spend 15 minutes doing it right, and you can spend the rest of your time focusing on Mickey waffles, fireworks, and unforgettable memories.
